Business Vehicle Use
The right coverage depends on how your vehicles are actually used.
Many business owners assume that using a personal vehicle for work automatically means they need a Commercial Auto policy. In reality, the answer depends on how the vehicle is owned, who drives it, and how it's used.
Before recommending any coverage, I take time to understand your business operations and help determine whether your existing personal auto policy can be modified to provide the protection you need—or whether Commercial Auto insurance is more appropriate.
Scenarios you may encounter
You may be:
Using your personal vehicle for occasional business errands
Making deliveries to customers
Visiting clients or job sites
Purchasing a vehicle for your business
Having employees drive company vehicles
Allowing employees to use their own vehicles for work
Questions I can help answer:
Can I use my personal vehicle for business purposes?
Sometimes.
Many personal auto policies permit certain incidental business use, while others may require a Business Use endorsement or another policy modification.
The answer depends on factors such as:
How often the vehicle is used for business
What type of business you operate
Whether you're transporting customers or goods
Whether employees drive the vehicle
Who owns the vehicle
Before assuming you need a Commercial Auto policy, we'll determine whether your current coverage can be appropriately adapted.
Do I need Commercial Auto insurance?
Not necessarily.
Some businesses require Commercial Auto coverage because of how their vehicles are used. Others can be adequately insured through a personal auto policy with appropriate endorsements.
Rather than recommending Commercial Auto by default, I'll review your situation and help determine the most appropriate solution for your needs.
What is a Business Use endorsement?
A Business Use endorsement is an endorsement offered by some personal auto insurers that expands coverage for certain business-related activities while allowing the vehicle to remain insured under a personal auto policy. Availability varies by insurance company and by the type of business.
If you already have a personal auto policy, I'll often recommend speaking with your current auto insurance carrier first to determine whether this option is available before exploring Commercial Auto coverage.
What if employees drive company vehicles?
If your business owns vehicles that employees operate, Commercial Auto insurance is often the appropriate solution.
We'll discuss:
Who drives the vehicles
How they're used
Whether employees take vehicles home
Whether specialized equipment is transported
Appropriate liability limits for your operations
What happens if an employee causes an accident while driving their own vehicle for my business?
Even when employees drive their own vehicles, your business may still have liability exposure depending on the circumstances.
In some situations, Hired and Non-Owned Auto Liability coverage may help protect your business when employees use their own vehicles for business purposes.
This is an important exposure that's often overlooked by small businesses.
Additional considerations
In addition to Business Use Endorsements, Commercial Auto Insurance, and Hired & Non-Owned Auto Liability Insurance, depending on your operations, we may discuss:
Commercial Umbrella Insurance
Inland Marine coverage for equipment transported in vehicles
Every business uses vehicles differently, so recommendations should be based on your actual operations rather than assumptions.
My approach
One of my goals is to help clients purchase the coverage they actually need—not simply the most coverage available.
In some cases, that may mean recommending a Commercial Auto policy.
In others, it may mean suggesting that you first contact your existing personal auto insurer to explore available endorsements or policy modifications. If your current policy can be adapted to meet your business needs, that may be the most practical and cost-effective solution.
My role is to help you understand your options so you can make an informed decision.
