Commercial Auto Insurance

Coverage for vehicles used in your business

Commercial auto insurance is designed for vehicles used in connection with a business, whether you operate a single work vehicle or maintain a larger commercial fleet.

I work with business owners to understand how their vehicles are used, who operates them, and what they need to protect, then explore commercial auto insurance options appropriate for their business.

What can commercial auto insurance cover?

Commercial auto policies can be structured to address several different types of risks, depending on the vehicles, drivers, and business operations involved.

Liability Coverage

Provides protection when an insured vehicle is involved in an accident and the business is legally responsible for bodily injury or property damage to others.

Uninsured & Underinsured Motorist Coverage

Can provide protection when your business vehicle is involved in an accident with a driver who has no insurance or insufficient insurance, subject to the terms of the policy and applicable state requirements.

Medical Payments Coverage

May help pay medical expenses for covered individuals injured in an accident involving an insured vehicle, regardless of who was at fault, subject to the policy’s terms and limits.

Comprehensive Coverage

Provides protection for covered losses to your vehicle that are not caused by a collision, such as theft, vandalism, fire, or certain weather-related damage.

Collision Coverage

Helps pay for covered damage to an insured vehicle resulting from a collision, subject to the policy's deductible.

Hired & Non-Owned Auto Coverage

Businesses may have automobile exposures even when they do not own the vehicles being used.

Hired and non-owned auto coverage can address certain liability exposures arising from vehicles rented, leased, or used by employees for business purposes, depending on the policy.

Will my personal auto insurance cover the business use of my vehicle, or do I need a separate commercial auto policy?

Not every vehicle used for business purposes necessarily requires a commercial auto policy, but using a personal auto policy for business activity when the policy is not designed for that use can create coverage issues. Factors such as who owns the vehicle, how it is used, who drives it, what it transports, and the nature of the business can all affect the appropriate type of coverage.

Some personal auto insurers offer a Business Use endorsement that expands coverage for certain business-related activities while allowing the vehicle to remain insured under a personal auto policy. Availability varies by insurance company and by the type of business.

If you already have a personal auto policy, I recommend speaking with your current auto insurance carrier first to determine whether this option is available before exploring Commercial Auto coverage.

What businesses might need commercial auto insurance?

Commercial auto insurance may be appropriate for businesses that use vehicles as part of their normal operations, including:

  • Contractors and construction businesses

  • Delivery and service businesses

  • Tradespeople

  • Landscaping and maintenance companies

  • Real estate and property-management businesses

  • Restaurants and food-service businesses

  • Businesses with employees who drive for work

  • Businesses that own or lease company vehicles

  • Businesses that transport equipment, tools, or materials

  • Other businesses with regular business-related vehicle use

The appropriate coverage depends on how your vehicles are owned, operated, and used.

Insuring business-owned vehicles

Commercial vehicles can range from a single passenger vehicle used by a business owner to vans, pickups, box trucks, and other vehicles used as part of business operations.

To begin exploring commercial auto coverage, I’ll generally need information about your business, vehicles, drivers, and how the vehicles are used. I may need data such as:

  • Vehicle year, make, model, and VIN

  • Who owns or leases the vehicle

  • How the vehicle is used

  • Where the vehicle is normally garaged

  • Estimated annual mileage

  • Territories in which the vehicle operates

  • Who will be driving the vehicle

  • Driver history and experience

  • What the vehicle carries or transports

  • Whether the vehicle is used for deliveries, service calls, commuting, or other business activities

Reviewing existing commercial auto coverage

Do you already have commercial auto insurance?

I’m happy to review your existing coverage with you to help determine whether it continues to make sense for your business and how your vehicles are currently being used.

Changes in your business, vehicles, drivers, operations, or territory can all affect your insurance needs.

If you already have a commercial auto policy, your current declarations page can also be helpful when reviewing your existing coverage or exploring alternatives.
