Workers’ Compensation Insurance
Coverage for the people who keep your business running
If you have employees, workers’ compensation insurance can be an important part of operating your business responsibly and meeting your legal obligations as an employer.
I work with business owners to help them understand their workers’ compensation needs, explore available coverage options, and obtain a policy appropriate for their business.
Do I need workers’ compensation insurance?
In California, employers with one or more employees are generally required to maintain workers’ compensation coverage. This includes businesses with full-time and part-time employees. California also provides certain exceptions and allows qualifying employers to self-insure with state approval.
If you are starting a business or preparing to hire your first employee, workers’ compensation insurance should be part of your planning process.
Requirements can also apply to businesses based outside California when employees regularly work in California or when the employment relationship is entered into in California.
What does workers’ compensation insurance cover?
Workers’ compensation is designed to provide benefits to employees who suffer work-related injuries or illnesses, while helping employers meet their obligations under the workers’ compensation system.
Depending on the circumstances, benefits can include:
Medical care Treatment for a work-related injury or illness.
Temporary disability benefits Partial wage replacement when an injury prevents an employee from working while recovering.
Permanent disability benefits Benefits when an employee does not fully recover from a work-related injury or illness.
Supplemental job displacement benefits Assistance with retraining or skill enhancement in qualifying circumstances.
Death benefits Benefits for eligible dependents when a work-related injury or illness results in an employee’s death.
Workers’ compensation can apply to both injuries resulting from a specific workplace incident and certain illnesses or conditions that develop through repeated workplace exposure.
Starting a business or hiring your first employee?
If you’re preparing to hire employees for the first time, workers’ compensation is one of several insurance and administrative considerations to address before your team gets to work. I can help you explore workers’ compensation coverage alongside other business insurance needs, such as:
Other specialized business coverages
Looking at these coverages together can help provide a more complete picture of your business’s insurance needs.
Reviewing your existing workers’ compensation policy
Already have workers’ compensation coverage? I can also help review your existing policy and discuss whether your current coverage continues to reflect your business.
Changes such as hiring additional employees, adding new job classifications, changing payroll, expanding operations, or opening another location can affect your insurance needs.
A regular review can help you identify changes that may need to be communicated to your insurer and make sure your policy information remains current.
Workers’ compensation and your business
Workers’ compensation is more than simply another business expense. It is part of the system designed to provide employees with benefits when they are injured or become ill because of their work, while providing employers with a defined framework for addressing workplace injuries and illnesses.
My role is to help you navigate the insurance side of that process and find coverage that fits your business and its operations and ensure that your coverage is in compliance with your state’s regulations.
How can I help with workers’ compensation?
Whether you are hiring your first employee, opening a new business, or reviewing an existing workers’ compensation policy, I can help you explore your options.
