Homeowners Insurance

Your home is more than a building. It’s where you live, the property you've accumulated, and an important part of your financial life.

Homeowners insurance can help protect your home and personal property while providing liability coverage for certain claims arising from your ownership and use of the property.

What can homeowners insurance cover?

  • Dwelling coverage Helps protect the structure of your home against covered causes of loss, subject to the policy’s terms, conditions, limits, and exclusions.

  • Other structures Coverage may extend to certain structures on your property that are separate from your main home, such as detached garages, sheds, fences, or other qualifying structures.

  • Personal property Helps protect belongings inside your home, such as furniture, clothing, appliances, electronics, and other personal possessions, when damaged or lost due to a covered cause of loss.

  • Loss of use / additional living expenses If a covered loss makes your home uninhabitable, coverage may help with certain additional expenses you incur while your home is being repaired or rebuilt.

  • Personal liability Can help protect you against certain covered claims alleging that you are legally responsible for bodily injury or property damage to another person.

  • Medical payments to others May provide limited coverage for certain medical expenses when a guest is injured on your property, regardless of whether you are legally liable, subject to the policy's terms and limits.

  • Additional coverage options Depending on the insurer and your circumstances, additional endorsements or specialized coverage may be available for exposures that aren't adequately addressed by a standard homeowners policy.

What isn’t covered?

Homeowners insurance doesn't cover every possible cause of loss. Policies contain exclusions, limitations, deductibles, and conditions that are important to understand. Oftentimes, certain valuable possessions may require scheduling or additional coverage.

Do you own valuable jewelry or other collectibles that may require additional coverage?

Earthquake and flood damage also generally require separate insurance, rather than being automatically included in a standard homeowners policy. If you are concerned about earthquake or flood exposure, please explore their coverages here:

Is homeowners insurance right for you?

This page is specifically for owner-occupied homes. If your situation is different, another type of property coverage may be more appropriate:

  • Own a condominium? Condo insurance is designed around the way ownership and responsibility are divided between you and your association.

  • Rent your home or apartment? Renters insurance can protect your personal property and provide liability coverage without insuring the building itself.

  • Rent out a property you own? Landlord insurance is designed for properties used as rental dwellings.

  • Own a particularly high-value home? Specialized high-value home insurance may provide broader coverage and higher limits than a conventional homeowners policy.
